Mount Nelson This colt is from the first crop of 'Rock of Gibraltar' out of a Selkirk mare, suggesting that he is bred to be a star miler with a good pace and a potential middle distance champion, so the Eclipse or QEII look possible targets as well as the classics.
Aiden O'Brien has a fine replacement for Holy Roman Emperor as his top classic contender this season. His first of three races late last year was just to get used to the racetrack. He built on that by demolishing the field in his maiden win and quickly followed that up with a Group 1 Criterium International win at St. Cloud in Paris, breaking the 1600m (1 mile) track record for a juvenile in the process.
He may show up in the 2000 Guineas but nothing is sure for the moment, so hold the ante-post bets before he is confirmed as a runner. O'Brien is likely to test the French field with a second stringer before deciding whether to send Mount Nelson or another contender to raid the French classics.
With most money going on the Dewhurst contenders, Mount Nelson could well be a live outsider for the 2000 guineas, although he is more fancied in the markets for the Derby distance.
