Flat Racing 2007 Season - Europe Newmarket, Wednesday 18th April 2007 Going - Good to Firm
Shadwell Nell Gwyn Stakes, £50,000, 7f, 3yo, fillies, Group 3 The first big shock of the season had the strong ante-post favourite for the 1000 guineas, Sander Camillo (L.Dettori, J.Noseda), beaten a neck by the Dunlop trained Scarlet Runner (K.McEvoy, J.L.Dunlop). The 4/7 odd-on favourite never looked comfortable on the good to firm ground and only a brave heart enabled her to get as close as she did near the end.
The winner has a good record on firm ground and can be counted on again on this surface in another class 1 race, but probably not the 1000 guineas.
The runner-up will need to improve if a group 1 is to be won. She showed scintillating form last year on firm ground, so it is a bit of a mystery why she hasn't shown her true self this time around. Based on last year, she is probably worth another shot before deciding that she hasn't trained on properly. Her trainer insisted after the race that although the race was not perfect, she is still on course for the 1000 Guineas and after nine months away from the track, this was just fine for a prep race.
